The Ridiculousness of People Getting Pissed Over Comic Storylines

Thor is going to be a woman and Captain America is going to be a black guy. Holy shit, really?!?!?! Why would Marvel do that? These are characters who have been beloved for decades, and now Marvel has decided to change them. Gotta appease the Liberals crying for diversity. Marvel should be ashamed of doing this. This is outrageous and uncalled for! Think of the children!

The above is just a mixture of stupid comments I read on message boards after Marvel made their announcements. A lot of people flipped over these changes, and I honestly don't understand why. It is not the first time Thor has changed. He was a frog for a while and two different times a human actually became Thor. Eric Masterson and Jake Olson. The new female Thor is not Thor Odinson, but rather someone who starts to use Mjolnir after Thor becomes unworthy of wielding it. Thor will still be in the books,  just minus mighty Mjolnir.

As for Cap, I cannot even name off all the different people who have been Captain America over the years. Most recently it was Bucky, and before that John Walker was Cap after Steve Rogers was stripped of his role by the government. So a new person becoming Cap is not a new thing. In the Marvel U. it was established that while Steve Rogers was floating around as a human ice cube, different men portrayed Cap to keep the public unaware of his apparent death.

These are storylines. They will not be permanent changes. They are storylines attracted to draw in new readers. Marvel is a company. They need to make money. Even the top selling comics do not make money like a top selling book or CD. So every few years Marvel and DC switch things up to keep it fresh and attract new readers. This has been happening for a very long time. Why has it got so much bigger now? The Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I think a lot people would be surprised to learn that Cap, Thor and Iron Man where not nearly as popular a few years ago as they are today. Thor went without a title for some time and Cap and Iron Man were never really the top selling books at Marvel. That honor goes to Spidey and the X-Family (mainly Wolverine). Sure Cap, Tony and Thor were important to the Universe as a whole, but they didn't pop up in almost every single series, like Spidey and Logan. With the exception of the occasional crossover, these three were limited to their solo books and The Avengers. That changed when the first Iron Man movie came out. Then came Thor. Then Cap. Now these three heroes had movies promoting them to people outside the comic fandom. Good movies.  Movies that made huge amounts of money. More money made then several years worth of their comic sales.

So when Marvel Announced the changes in the comics, almost ever article I read covering the story had to bring up the movie universe. Was Falcon going to become Cap when Evans retires from acting? No. Sebastian Stan, who plays Bucky, has signed on for several movies. We will see Bucky-Cap before Falcon Cap. Hemsworth still has a few movies in his contract left to make. Will we see a actress take over the Thor franchise? Doubtful. Most likely when Hemsworth is done with Thor, Marvel will just start a new franchise.  Guardians of the Galaxy opens a whole bunch of possibilities for new franchies. Add that to the Netflix deal Marvel made and we have way move options then just recasting Thor.

This is a great time to be a comic fan and we should be happy. The Marvel Now relaunches have mostly been great, and Marvel keeps churning out great movies. Don't let a couple of minor storylines get your panties in a knot. Marvel is in a good place right now, telling some great stories. It is a good time for comics and for comic book movies. Well, unless you're a DC fan. That is a whole different story. 'Nuff said.
